one
day in may
Saturday, 9 a.m.
As the outside
world yawns and stretches to life on another May morning, business is booming
at this midtown abortion clinic. Clients -- ranging in age from 13 to 40
-- slowly take their seats in the waiting room.
Although they
are a quiet group, each has a story to tell. There's Melissa Thornton and
her socialite Mom. The youngest present, Melissa's scared to death
-- even though Mom does her best to reassure her. Rosa, Catholic
as can be, is here at the insistence of her boyfriend. A child of the streets
and repeat client, Kari knows all too well what's to come, but she
doesn't see any way around it. Michael is the odd one out -- he's here
in an attempt to dissuade his prodigal sister from making a mistake.
Only Angela Stone hides her fear and pain well behind a clever mask of
feminism and tolerance.
Enter Matt
and Drew. Pained expressions aside, they're a couple of Xers in love. And
in trouble. Although deep inside she knows it's wrong, Drew believes an
abortion is her only option. Matt's far from convinced.
But he'll do anything
for Drew -- including standing by as she carries out her decision.
As the couple
waits, a tense, sometimes sad, sometimes bizarre, drama plays out. Through
Angela's eyes, black is white. But the steady procession of women exiting
the treatment area with pale, tear-stained faces raises serious questions
in Drew's and Matt's minds. Angela attempts to soothe Drew's fears
in a variety of ways, including sharing her perspective on "choice",
relationships and God.
Stirred by
his conscience and Angela's remarks, Matt slowly begins to challenge
Drew and Angela -- and the sparks fly.
But as the
physical and spiritual battle for Drew's unborn baby rages, the clock ticks
on...
Will Drew
change her mind -- before it's too late?
And how
far will Matt go to stand up for what he knows is right?
