THE ART
OF ADAPTATION
Turning Fact
and Fiction into Film
By Linda Seger
Without a doubt,
this is one of the best books on the market for turning a true story into
one worthy of the stage or screen. Seger's credits are long: She's been
a story consultant for TV and film production companies around the globe
-- and her book shows it. With the skill of a surgeon, she carefully dissects
the intricacies of adaptation, from optioning your first piece, to trimming
extraneous characters and sub plots and weaving a compelling story line.
With fascinating case studies of such successfully adapted works as Field
of Dreams and Driving Miss Daisy, this book isn't just readable
and practical -- it's an inspiration.

Think of a "dream
team" of artists assembled with the goal of sharing the why and how of
serving our Creator through creative endeavor, and you've got the flavor
of:
IT WAS GOOD
Making Art to
the Glory of God
By Various Authors
With insightful essays
written by 12 authors, including famed songwriter/producer Charlie Peacock-Ashworth,
Makoto Fujimura, founder of the International Arts Movement and Tim Keller,
Pastor of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in New York City, this book demands
your complete attention. Spiritual, scholarly, yet often practical, you'll
be challenged to meditate on each perspective -- and prayerfully consider
ways to incorporate the authors' learning and approaches into your cinematic
vision.

Headed to Hollywood?
Don't go until you read:
THE SEDUCTIVE
IMAGE
Cinema &
The Christian Faith
By K. Lloyd Billingsley
With flair, wry humor
and insight, Billingsley offers a sobering assessment of the challenges
facing those with a desire to impact culture through film. He's a little
too tough on World Wide Pictures for our tastes, but Billingsley's chapter
on "religion and movies" should be required reading for aspiring film majors.
(And, at the very least, will help you compile a great list of films
to study -- both for examples on how to handle the topic and how Hollywood
usually handles it.) The Seductive Image remains a savvy, knowing
look at Tinseltown's ways, truisms and lies.

you're looking for a great introduction to writing for the stage, we strongly
recommend:
PLAYWRITING
A Study in Choices
and Challenges
by Paul McCusker
A writer, director
and producer for Focus on the Family's excellent Adventure in Odyssey
radio series, he's packed this slim, easy-to-read volume with great spiritual
and dramatic truths and how-to writing advice. But before he really starts
teaching, McCusker does a little preaching to those who aspire to serve
the Lord through theater. Instead of creating "cardboard characters" that
mouth moral platitudes or "sermons thinly disguised as stories," he challenges
Christians to write truthfully. And when we do so, he makes the case that
people will be even more willing to listen to the Gospel message.
"The difference between art and propaganda, or art and commercials...(is
that) art must not merely inform but open our hearts and imaginations,"
says McCusker. The story and character brainstorming techniques alone are
worth the book's price.

Of all the screenwriting
books we've seen over the years, one stands out among the rest. It's called:
The Writer's Journey
by Chris Vogler
From the book cover:
"Writers are storytellers. The best of them have used the principles of
myth to create masterful stories that are dramatic, entertaining and psychologically
true...Writers will discover step-by-step guidelines for structuring plots
and creating realistic characters. Innovative exercises help writers troubleshoot
and improve their own work..."
Based on the work
of Joseph Campbell, The Writer's Journey is not only a great guide
to screen and play writing and story telling, but it also provides insight
into the ideas that shape Hollywood's dream factory.

"Can we discern God's
voice in the modern parables of film?" author/ screenwriter Ken Gire says
yes in:
Reflections on
the Movies
Hearing God in
the Unlikeliest of Places
By Ken Gire
From the back cover:
"Stories. Be it a parable of Jesus, a C.S. Lewis fantasy, or a movie such
as Saving Private Ryan, stories have been around since Creation,
a means of both education and entertainment. By far, our favorite way to
listen to a story today is at the movies, whether in a theater or a family
room..."Can we discern God's voice in the modern parables of film?
Yes, it is there,
sometimes loud and crystal-clear, sometimes barely a whisper, sometimes
even despite the filmmaker's intent..."

ministry through arts and drama needs to be ignited -- or re-ignited --
you've got to check out:
ROARING LAMBS
A Gentle Plan
to Radically Change Your World
By Bob Briner
Among other hard
questions Briner asks: Where are the Christian film and television writers?
Why aren't Hollywood and Madison Avenue considered mission fields?
Roaring
Lambs' message is more urgent and important than ever as our cynical,
media saturated society slides toward disaster.

VIDEOS
One
day, when we're a bigger company, we'll probably offer more videos
than the ones listed here. (Perhaps in the studio store of our international
headquarters.) But our criteria for selecting them will be same: Excellent
stories and acting that help convey the power and challenges of living
the Christian life.
The first is our
own film:
one day in may
Produced by Double-Edged
Entertainment, LLC
The story: A college
senior must overcome shame and betrayal to fight for the life of his girlfriend's
unborn baby. Winner of the award for "Most Creative Story Line" at the
WYSIWYG Film Fest, one day in may stars
Maria Bellantoni, John-Paul Lavoisier and Chrisie Penna.
We include it, naturally,
because we produced it(!) But also because we hope it inspires other indie
filmmakers to address important topics from a Christian perspective. Not
only that, we want to demonstrate what can be done on an extremely limited
budget. We only wish Alfred Hitchcock -- the true master of low budget
filmmaking -- were around to take a look.
Format: VHS
Price: $20.00
The next video we
offer rates as perhaps the most touching, true-to-life story of all time.
It's called:
A Vow to Cherish
Produced by World
Wide Pictures
From the back cover:
"A Vow to Cherish is the deeply moving love story of John and Ellen
Brighton. Together, they face a merciless illness that will either confirm
their love or destroy their marriage...A Vow to Cherish illustrates
the importance of living by godly principles in front of a world searching
for answers."
If this film doesn't
make you cry, you should probably check your pulse to make sure you still
have one!
Format: VHS
Price: $20.00
Hollywood often struggles
when tackling Christian themes and stories, but this one is as good as
they get. We're talking about :
Shadowlands
From the back cover:
"Based on a true story, C.S. Lewis (Anthony Hopkins) is a world-renowned
writer and professor. Unmarried, he leads a gentleman's life filled by
intellectual pursuits...until he meets Joy Gresham (Debra Winger). Joy
is a feisty, abrasive New York divorcee who's sharp-edged, no-nonsense
attitude takes Lewis by surprise..."
(Don't want to spoil
it for you, but it's another tear-jerker.)
Format: VHS
Price: $20.00
Long before Schindler's
List, World Wide Pictures produced a remarkable World War II saga that
you've got to see called:
The Hiding Place
From the back cover:
"Based on the true story that has captivated 8,000,000 readers, The
Hiding Place is one of the most extraordinary stories to come out of
World War II. Filmed in Holland and other authentic European locations,
the film traces the lives of Corrie ten Boom, her father, and sister Betsie,
from the quiet years before World War II, to their work on the 'underground'
in helping save the lives of countless Jewish families..."
