New international
distribution and
the case of the
disappearing
Amazon.com review

          The wait is over.
Indie film fans and pro-lifers in over two dozen countries can now have one day in may on DVD right away.
The award-winning feature -- the first to dramatize the documented links between abortion and serious health problems --  is now available in the following countries:  Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, UK (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland, and Wales). Other regions and territories are pending. To order, just click here.
But as we've discovered, progress for one day in may is often not without opposition.  The following unsolicited review was mysteriously removed from Amazon.com a few weeks ago.  While we attempt to convince the company to put it back, we're re-posting it verbatim below:

Finally!!!

"Whether you want to believe it or not, Hollywood is nearly completely saturated in liberal politics. Because of this the (self proclaimed) open minded directors, writers, and actors of Hollywood have nearly completely destroyed any freedom of speech in the realm of politics as expressed on film. If you are not pro-choice and if you are not pro-gay marriage you have little, if any, chance of being heard, of making your films, political or not. This film, One day in May, might be compared to the Threepenny Opera, which was snuffed out by Hitler and his Nazis. No, America is not Germany of the 1920's, however, America's art culture is. Our art culture is dominated by people with specific convictions, which is ok, but it is not ok to destroy the expression of the convictions of others, which is presently the case. This is the only dramatic film I have found that supports the pro-life movement. Is this film bias? Certainly, but so was the Cider House Rules & so was the Cabaret. My point is simply this; this film deserves to be seen, not just by me, but by anyone who claims to have an open mind. The Liberals and Democrats say that we need both sides to have a balanced nation, but when they gain control of something they abandon such words and monopolize whatever they are controlling. This film is very profound, it does not hide its convictions beneath an idealistic plot, (Cider House Rules) it does not "beat around the bush" so to speak. I took away one star because the acting wasn't up to pare in my opinion, however, I gave it four because it isn't very often you find a director and a group of actors who have the courage and the gal to say what this film says. It is about time there is a film for the other side of this controversial issue. I am not completely against the pro-choice movement, mind you, nor am I against gay marriage, I am simply against brushing this bold film under the rug. Rent it, buy it, see it, understand it."

PBS passes, prefers
"pro-choice" agi-prop
for TV broadcast

Perhaps it's no huge surprise, but one day in may has been turned down by PBS -- ironically just a few days before "The Last Abortion Clinic" aired on the left-wing monolith.
In a standard, but inaccurate, ding letter, a senior program associate there wrote:

"Though the story is intriguing, we have limited opportunities to schedule stand-alone documentaries..."

     Okay...

Set in the waiting room of an abortion clinic, one day in may is actually a dramatic feature that tells the story of a college senior who must overcome abuse and betrayal to fight for the life of his girlfriend's unborn baby.
Winner of the award for "Most Creative Story Line" at the 3rd annual WYSIWYG Film Festival, it's perhaps the first to explore the documented health risks and consequences of abortion -- including breast cancer, suicide, fetal pain and depression.
On the other hand, the hour-long documentary "The Last Abortion Clinic" laments prolife efforts to pass parental consent laws and even regulate US clinics -- while successfully avoiding discussion of abortion's threats to women's health.  (Not to mention the babies.)
Broadcast on Nov. 9, "The Last Abortion Clinic" is unintentionally encouraging to those who value unborn children and their moms. But  its intended audience is likely gasping in horror at the idea of duly elected state legislatures passing laws that safeguard their citizens -- even their tiniest ones.
    It's just so "pre-Roe".
Meanwhile,  the producers of one day in may offer this challenge: We'll be glad to bring our film and debate/discuss the issue with the producers of "The Last Abortion Clinic".
     Any time.
     Any where.

one day in may to appear on "Family Theater"

For a low budget, indie film, one day in may is making more than its share of primetime US appearances. On the heels of the FaithTV Mother's Day showing, the pro-life movie is now set to appear on FamilyNet's "Family Theater" on August 18 (7 p.m.) and 23 (9 p.m.) The broadcast has the potential of reaching 34 million viewers, according to the folks at FamilyNet. At this writing, the FamilyNet team was readying a :30 promo they planned to use to make viewers aware of the film... A subtitled version of one day in may was broadcast during primetime in July in Romania on TeleABC -- which reaches 70 percent of the country. (Sadly, 70 percent of all pregnancies in Romania end in abortion. ) LORD willing, other international agreements and broadcasts are pending. Stay tuned... A Spanish language website has been created to coincide with the release of un dia en mayo. You can take a peek by clicking here. The one day in may site will get an overdue tweak shortly... Been waiting for  one day in may or un dia en mayo to come to DVD? You can now get both on the same DVD -- and view the intro to the film -- by clicking here... From the "Where are they now?" department, Double-Edged is pleased to report that one day in may director Mark Todd Bruner and his wife Michelle have had not one, but two plays they've co-written accepted into playwriting festivals. Discordant Duets  was to appear in The International Fringe Festival, while Someone to Love Me  has been accepted into the prestigious Samuel French Festival in New York City...Meanwhile, Hunno Records is about to release a 10 song CD by singer/songwriter Debra Soule. "Tentatively titled The Spirit of Christmas  it will include nine popular religious Christmas songs and one original Christmas song called ASTOUNDED." Soule's "Think You Know" and "Perfect Love" appear on the one day in may soundtrack, while Soule's husband Rob Solberg is the film's sound designer. (And one of the hardest working guys in show business.) Congrats all around, friends!

    teen
    pub
    plugs
      one day
      in may

Once again, one day in may finds itself in some pretty good company.
Among mini-reviews of Rebecca St. James' book "Wait for Me" and CDs by The Elms and SuperChic(k), is a plug for the low budget, pro-life feature in the Spring '03 issue of Teens for Life.
Mike Fichter, head of Indiana Right to Life, ran the piece after watching one day in may on FaithTV in Feb. The publication is mailed to 30,000 homes -- and is also distributed at music fests and other youth-oriented events.
Set in the waiting room of an abortion clinic, one day in may is the story of a college senior who must overcome abuse and betrayal to fight for the life of his girlfriend's unborn baby.
Winner of the award for "Most Creative Story Line" at the WYSIWYG Film Festival, the indie feature co-stars Maria Bellantoni (ER, Law and Order), John-Paul Lavoisier (One Life to Live) and Chrisie Penna.
Since 1973, over 43 million unborn babies have been killed in the US by abortion. What's more, dozens of medical studies have linked this so-called "safe and legal" procedure  to breast cancer, suicide, infertility and depression, among other serious health problems.
With short, well-written articles and excellent graphics, Teens for Life does an awesome job of sharing this kind of important information with young people -- and we're honored that one day in may was mentioned.

one day in may gets praise, award at fest

one day in may's world premiere was a good day indeed.
After the indie feature unspooled at the third annual WYSIWYG Film Festival in San Francisco on Oct. 25, the Double-Edged team was treated to applause and many enthusiastic comments.
Young filmmakers dubbed it a "great indie film" and remarked that it had excellent "crossover" potential for secular fests, networks or cablers such as HBO.
A fest organizer observed that it garnered the longest sustained applause of the event until that point.  (As it turned out, the next and last film shown, "The Calling", received more.)
A Hollywood veteran confided that the drama moved her to tears -- as did an older moviegoer, who prefaced his comments with a warm hug.
Several audience members said the film kept them on the edge of their seats -- and many remarked that the acting was among the best of the fest.
The good news got even better during the closing ceremony: one day in may was honored with the award for "Most Creative Story Line".
Set in the waiting room of an abortion clinic,  the film is the story of a college senior who overcomes abuse and betrayal to fight for the life of his girlfriend's unborn baby.
Since 1973, over 43 million unborn babies have been killed by abortion. What's more, dozens of medical studies have linked this so-called "safe and legal" procedure  to breast cancer, suicide and depression, among other serious health problems.
The film co-stars Maria Bellantoni (ER and Law & Order), John-Paul Lavoisier (One Life to Live) and Chrisie Penna. Mark Todd Bruner directed, Dave Baldwin was cinematographer. Original music was by Rob Solberg; "Think You Know" by singer/songwriter Debra Soule opens the piece, while "Perfect Love" plays during the "surprise" ending. The film was written and produced by Brian and Rebecca Kaufman.

    "eye on the right"

What do Big Idea Productions ("VeggieTales", "Jonah"), Cloud Ten Pictures ("Left Behind"), Jenkins Entertainment ("Hometown Legend") and Double-Edged Entertaiment (one day in may) have in common? All were singled out in a recent column called "Eye on the Right" published by a California non-profit known as "The Commonweal Institute".

          Here's an excerpt:

"What Would Jesus Do? Maybe start his own movie production company. Since the late 1990s, conservative evangelical production companies have released several surprisingly successful movies nationwide, using mainstream cinematic genres, familiar actors, popular music, and sophisticated special effects to promote a right-wing political agenda...Now, the Christian Right movie business, inspired by the success of Omega Code, is beginning to compete on Hollywood's own turf, vying for the hearts and minds (and pocketbooks) of American movie-goers. Among the offerings:

One Day in May (Double-Edged Entertainment). Soon to tour the film festival circuit, this youth-oriented anti-abortion melodrama is touted as "Gen X Breakfast Club meets the ANTI-Ciderhouse Rules." Although pitched as a "debate" about abortion, the film's website contains only extreme anti-feminist and anti-choice propaganda linking abortion to pedophilia, crime, drug abuse, and suicide..."

Note to our friends at The Commonweal Institute:  At least 90 percent of the "anti-choice propaganda" on the one day in may site are stories from mainstream newspapers and medical journals.
(Last time we checked, hardly a hardcore, pro-life crowd.)
But thanks for helping us get the message out  -- and putting us in such good company!

net coverage, "soule success" top one day in may update

Less than a week after actor Maria Bellantoni and one day in may garnered world-wide-web coverage on ChristianAnswers.net, the film's soundtrack is getting some press.
First, the popular Christian music site, The Phantom Tollbooth, made its readers aware that Double-Edged Entertainment picked up two songs by singer/songwriter Debra Soule for one day in may.
Then, crosswalk.com -- which hosts one of the web's largest Christian sites -- republished the piece for its audience.
Double-Edged has also learned that Soule is this month's featured artist on Spirit FM, one of Minnesota's biggest contemporary Christian stations.
Set in the waiting room of an abortion clinic, one day in may is the story of a college senior who overcomes abuse and betrayal to fight for the life of his girlfriend's unborn baby.
Check back soon for what could be the most exciting announcement about the film since completion of principal photography!

Angela Stone (Maria Bellantoni) reacts to the revelation of the Mystery Kid (Logan Bruner).
one day in may got a major boost on Monday when ChristianAnswers.Net  went live with an interview featuring Maria Bellantoni.
Billed as "the world's largest and most popular Christian movie/video review site"  ChristianAnswers.net receives over one million hits a day,  while its reviews "are syndicated to many other web sites and published in Christian newspapers and magazines around the world," according to a press release.
In a wide ranging interview, Bellantoni shared how she prepared for her role as Angela Stone in one day in may -- as well as offering advice to Christian actors.

from one day in may to day time tv

You wouldn't call it "overnight" success. But only a matter of months after wrapping one day in may, John-Paul Lavoisier has reportedly signed a four year contract to appear on One Life to Live.
The DE team isn't surprised. Picked from among over 400 actors who attended one day in may's New York City casting, it was clear Lavoisier has the talent, personality and work ethic to succeed.
Set in the waiting room of an abortion clinic, the film is the fictional story of Matt Daniels, a college senior who overcomes abuse and betrayal to fight for the life of his girlfriend's unborn baby.
Lavoisier's solid portrayal of Daniels is only heightened by strong performances from co-stars Maria Bellantoni and Chrisie Penna -- as well as the rest of the cast. Mark Todd Bruner directed; David Baldwin was cinematographer.
(Devoted fans of the television series Law and Order will be familiar with Bellantoni; she appeared in two episodes, as well as co-starring on an episode of ER.)

one day in may gets some "soule"

Double-Edged Entertainment has added some "soule" to its soundtrack for the film one day in may.
           Debra Soule, that is.
Under a recent agreement between Double-Edged and Sunhill Records, LLC,  Soule's powerful single "Think You Know" will now serve as the film's haunting introduction, while "Perfect Love" plays during the closing credits.  The tracks appear on Soule's debut album "Vapor", recently released by Sunhill.
A short time after the album shipped, Soule's song "Everlasting" hit #1 on the Adult Alternative charts at MP3.com.  (check it out at www.mp3.com/debra_soule.)
Set in the waiting room of an abortion clinic, one day in may is the story of a college senior who overcomes abuse and betrayal to fight for the life of his girlfriend's unborn baby.
The Double-Edged team chose "Think You Know" as its' "title track" because the song helps raise the question of whether people really know the truth about this procedure -- which has claimed the lives of nearly 40 million babies in the U.S. since 1972.
For example, there are a number of credible studies published in peer-reviewed
medical journals suggesting links to breast cancer, suicide, depression, infertility, cerebral palsy and other medical complications. What's more, newspapers have documented stories of women who have been killed, maimed, molested or injured in the process.
